.Betsey’s Real
Estate began in 1996 in a small office in the basement
of Betsey Merritt’s
Roanoke Rapids home and has been growing ever since.
Betsey’s southern heritage taught her the importance
of honesty and hard work, and the value of a good
sense of humor and it is these traits that have served
her well in life as well as in her career.

Betsey was born in Seaboard, NC where graduated from
North Hampton High School. Betsey says that she learned
the basics of customer service while working at Fannies
while growing up in Seaboard, but her first “real” job
was as a buyer for Riches Department Store in Atlanta.

Soon there were new priorities in Betsey’s
life. She married Rob Wilson in 1969. Rob was a fighter
pilot and a test pilot for the USAF. They had two
children, Kate and Brad and the family lived all
over the world while on assignment in Germany, Spain,
England, Texas, Arizona, Florida and North Carolina.
Rob died in 1978 while training in Whitesands, NV.
Betsey and the children moved back to North Hampton
County and soon after to Roanoke Rapids. Then in
1980, Betsey married Tom Merritt, a high school science
teacher and the family has since grown to include
5 wonderful grandchildren.

Betsey’s real estate career started in 1981
while working as a managing broker at Ginger Hale
Realty. She was fortunate to learn a lot about running
a business and the local real estate market during
this time, and with her love of people and understanding
of the area, along with her drive to succeed, Betsey
decided to start her own company. Betsey has a strong
understanding of the community and the local real
estate market and she’s very successful in
both business and her personal life. Some of her
achievements include:

• Rookie of the year- Goldsboro MLS, 1976
• Roanoke Valley Lake Gaston Board of Realtors,
secretary-treasurer, vice president twice, and two
time president, in 1990 and 2003
• Realtor of the Year, 1990 and 2005
• State Board of Realtors Director, four years
• Roanoke Rapids Graded School District School
Board, 12 years
• Director of Halifax Regional Hospital Foundation
